Micah's Note:

Kim Il-Sung was a fierce Korean freedom fighter who won the respect of his Japanese enemies and the admiration of his followers. He also went on to found what would become the world’s most oppressive and closed Communist nation where Christians are routinely executed. One surprising fact about Kim is that his maternal grandfather was a protestant minister. What happened? In his autobiography, Kim relates how his mother went to church “to relax.” She slept through every service Kim remembered. Where was his father? Kim doesn’t mention him. Today in North Korea, Christianity is officially legal. Christians are not executed for worshipping Jesus but for not following all the other rules added to Christianity by the communist regime. I wonder how things would be different if his Dad and Mom had taught young Kim how Jesus has set us free with his unlimited power that even death could not contain.

"So Jesus said the Jews who had believed in him, 'If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'" John 8:31,32 ESV
